Teachers in the Southwest Vermont Education Association approve a recommendation to send the Vermont Education Department report on local schools to the National Education Association. Balloting has completed.
Bennington's 145000 dollar revenue sharing windfall will largely cover bonded indebtedness, with 125000 invested for months before retiring town bonds. The plan reduces indebtedness and taxes, saving about 125000 in interest over 20 years, while 3500 is set for Willow Park improvements and remaining funds go to a contingency. Some 4377 was later spent on a food stamp subsidy. trucks and health agency subsidies were declined.
President Nixon’s lawyer said the White House would not produce 11 Watergate tapes but would provide a partial transcript of one related to ITT contributions. The committee was told many milk-contribution tapes were never recorded before 1971.
Patricia Hearst told a hostage she joined the Symbionese Liberation Army because she felt her family did not meet the kidnappers demands. Authorities prepared for charges of kidnaping and other crimes as the FBI and LAPD hunted Hearst and the Harris duo. Prosecutors intended to charge Hearst with kidnaping of Tom Matthews and related offenses while federal weapon charges were filed earlier. Matthews, held last week, said Hearst discussed joining the SLA after a confrontational ride seeking a hacksaw and that she claimed she was not a willing victim.
The Vermont State Board of Education postponed a decision on certifying Ethan Allen Community College in Manchester. The Vermont Higher Education Council urged denial after a November visit, while an Education Department panel later found many problems solved and recommended certification. The board plans a final June action.
The Senate Judiciary Committee gave Leon Jaworski strong backing and urged the President to avoid firing him, while confirming his right to subpoena Watergate evidence. Senators Bayh and Mathias said Jaworski's independence should be protected and rejected a push for public hearings on powers. The panel narrowly defeated a bid for hearings and noted a possible presidential overreach if Jaworski were dismissed.
MONTPELIER UPI Gov Thomas P Salmon said Public Service Board Chairman William Gilbert will resign probably within months after public opposition to his stance on utility rate cases. The 31 year old Republican has faced criticism for supporting large rate increases for Central Vermont Public Service Corp and Green Mountain Power Corp as the PSB weighs hefty requests before year end.
Five Canadian provincial premiers will join six New England governors in New Haven to discuss energy and transportation from June 12 to 14. Prime Minister Bourassa will discuss the James Bay project, and Gov. Curtis will present on the Dickey-Lincoln electrical plan in northern Maine.
