Broadway Notes on Strindberg and Merriwell at the Ritz and Jones Beach

Drama reviewer JACK GAVER critiques the Ritz production of August Strindberg's Dance of Death starring Rip Torn and Viveca Lindfors as a failed direction and incomplete adaptation. He also pans the Frank Merriwell musical for weak libretto and songs, recalling a stronger off Broadway 1937 parody. Constance Towers returns in The Sound of Music at Jones Beach, with Guy Lombardo hosting a summer run, noting Carmen Lombardo's death earlier in the year.

A pro critic who dislikes TV drops a playful personal essay about not watching, then reports Nielsen Co data for 1970 showing a nation averaging just under six hours of TV per household daily. Women average about 30 hours weekly, men about 24, with higher viewing among lower income families and evenings 8 to 10 p.m. as peak viewing.

Television ownership and viewing habits analysis

The piece notes 96 percent of homes contain a TV, 44 percent own color sets, and color owners watch more. It critiques executives and critics who rarely watch, suggesting a flawed system with executives and critics not watching programs, prompting reflection on the TV culture.
