Newport expands tree planting while Bennington guards budgets
In Newport Vermont more than 60 young trees have been planted along streets as part of a push to replace losses from disease and construction. City Manager Peter Robinson says the emphasis is on more planting and less cutting, with $850 of this year’s $1,500 tree budget for planting. In Bennington, town leaders reject a planting plan, dashing hopes for a spring effort despite a $9,000 removal budget and high community interest. the Planning Commission will craft a next year program.
