Bus Contract Awarded To Arthur Paulin

Shaftsbury school board extended a three year busing contract to Arthur Paulin at 19400 per year plus about two thousand more for three years due to higher labor and equipment costs. They will also replace classroom door glass with safety glass as required by a fire marshal inspection and consider an expanded detection system and exit light batteries. The district plans to hire a lawyer to draw up the contract and expects to buy another bus for kindergarten transport.

Thumbs Down On Resident License Policy Debate

Vermont nonresident hunters and fishermen face hurdles in obtaining resident licenses. House Bill 50 would grant resident rates to out-of-staters owning 100 acres or more and paying at least 300 dollars in Vermont taxes, but Senate action stalled. The Fish and Game Department backs open acreage as the qualifying factor, arguing public access and land preservation trump price considerations. Commissioner Edward F. Kehoe supports this position.

Riehle Urges Jaycees to Engage with Vermont Politics

Theodore Riehle Jr. urged a Manchester Jaycees convention to “get in touch with politics” and bring ideas for Vermont to politicians. He warned progress requires linking civic groups with the political sector while noting evolving views on industry and the environment. The event honored Barre and South Burlington chapters, with John Stevens elected state Jaycee president and a stance supporting a June referendum on a constitutional convention.
