Habernickel built Haband from a shoestring to a $50 million mail order firm
New Jersey entrepreneur Max Habernickel started with $50 and a back bedroom office in Paterson. The Haband Co. grew into a mail order clothing business with about 30 million mail pieces annually, 50 years on, and a family-controlled ownership structure with his son and grandson guiding advertising and retail expansion. Habernickel runs a paternalistic shop, gifts bonuses and flowers to staff, and works late into evenings. He keeps sheep at a summer place and stays hands-on despite scaling up to several buildings and hundreds of employees.
