Pownal Water Contamination Prompts Permanent Boil Order
Pownal’s 600 water customers, served by the Murray Lewis owned Pownal Water Co., must boil water for five minutes due to gross contamination found by the state Health Department. The boil order is permanent until a coagulation filtration and disinfection system is installed, an expensive fix projected to cost thousands. Chlorination is irregular and current samples show 100 plus coliform bacteria. The open brook and pond source complicates disinfection, and a two step treatment involving chemical coagulation and granular filtration is proposed.
