Showers developing with intervals of sunshine and warm temperatures near 80. Tonight variable clouds with occasional showers or thunderstorms likely and low around 50. Friday periods of rain and occasional thunderstorms likely and cooler. Yesterday's high 75 and low 39. This morning at 7 a.m. 48 with sunset at 8 09 and sunrise at 5 31.
UPI report states helicopters evacuated approximately 200 Marines from Koh Tang after night fighting off Communist fire near Cambodian coast. Marines boarded the Mayaguez and were later joined by a freedom mission that freed 40 Americans and five Thais as Secretary Schlesinger called the operation eminently successful.
Bennington School District transportation committee, with eight attendees from the BSD network and press, unanimously recommended exploring ways to reduce bus transportation costs and to study the impact of strictly enforcing the one and a half mile walking rule district wide. The meeting, held at Mt. Anthony Junior High, aimed to find savings amid a tight district budget.
Vermont Governor Thomas Salmon backs State Manpower Director Daniel Holland after criticism of the CETA program. He cites Holland's superlative work amid some duplication of effort and notes 5,000 Vermonters have jobs under the program. A questionable placement of Anthony Scoville in an Environmental Agency job prompts calls for better use of the job bank and scrutiny of interceding officials.
Gov Salmon announced five additions to Vermonts new Transportation Board. Appointees include Henry O Angell Brattleboro H James Wallace Bennington Gerald R Martell Ludlow William T Costa Jr St Johnsbury and Arthur Rock Jr Burlington. Wallace and Rock are former Highway Board members. Angell and Costa are current Highway Board members. Robert A Gensburg East Burke was named chairman with a year term and acting Transportation Secretary until a full time head is chosen. A seventh member with railroad expertise is expected.
UPI reports student demonstrators in Savannakhet Laos freed Sanford J. Stone aged 58 and two other U S officials Charles Pearcy 63 and Daniel Ster 28 after overnight custody. They will stay at their residences awaiting negotiations on USAID presence and Lao official changes. The demonstrators still control U S government buildings in the Mekong town amid tensions with the coalition government.

UPI reports Senators Robert Stafford and Patrick Leahy voiced disappointment over failed diplomatic efforts to free the Mayaguez seized by Cambodians. Stafford urged forceful action to show resolve, while Leahy framed the move as acknowledging diplomacy had failed and urged backing President Ford to protect American ships against acts of international piracy.
The Justice Department said a federal grand jury will investigate the September death of burglary suspect Ponce in Burlington Vermont. Assistant Attorney General J Stanley Pottinger said the panel will convene in about a month to hear sworn testimony and act as an investigative body. Local officials had found Detective Harold Miles fired a shot into the back of Ponce head.
