The Shaftsbury site on East Road resumes a second summer season hosting new exhibits in the 1777 stage-road hostelry built by Peter Matteson the year of the Battle of Bennington. Visitors explore a loomhouse, a workshed with forge and early tools, plus a gift shop.
Mrs. Ruth S. Knowles told Vermont groups that American technology aided by oil and chemical research has averted famine and helped other nations grow self sufficient. She cited Mexican wheat and a new rice strain, noted India could be self sustaining in feed grains within a year, and argued journalism ignores such progress while highlighting war news.

A six month retirement bonus is offered to eligible white collar workers, and up to 3,500 jobs may be cut in consolidating 15 regional offices into five area headquarters. Leslie Bacon, 19, an antiwar activist, is charged in New York with conspiring with six Weathermen to firebomb a NYC bank in 1970. She sits as a material witness in Seattle while grand jurors probe antiwar activities including the Capitol bombing and the NYC plot. Her lawyers say she knew of early planning but withdrew, and New York prosecutors won’t prosecute her.
Two teenage girls Paulette Desell and Ellen McConnell became the Senate’s first girl pages, taking oaths from Senator Javits. They will join male pages, perform errands and messages, at a salary of 7380 dollars, with Julie Price to start next week under Senator Harris’s sponsorship.
