Jesuits return land to Indians with interest
A Kansas prairie plot gifted in 1848 by the Potawatomi to Jesuit missionaries has been repaid with interest. The Missouri Jesuit Province returned the land near St Marys along with 1000 adjoining acres and 12 buildings, valued over 750000 dollars, held in trust by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 200 Potawatomi descendants and other Kansas Indians. The Jesuits plan to aid the community by funding a school, daycare, and dairy farm on the site. The move followed extended talks over reparations, with officials stressing the land was given at tribal insistence and used to support Indian children’s futures.
