The New Cat of Brass Parody of Bennington Battle
Cynthia A. Dewey recalls the 1896 Second Battle of Bennington in a parody poem titled The New Cat of Brass. The piece reimagines Major Valentine and Duke George Wellington in a village struggle over a fallen tree, mixing local memory with satire and history.

Vermonters Begin White Pine Blister Rust War
Sixty two WPA workers on South Street start a multi month program to eradicate white pine blister rust by removing wild gooseberry and currant bushes within 100 feet of pine stands around Bennington. Highway report notes 67 miles of new Vermont roads built chiefly with bituminous treated gravel. three miles concrete, eight miles macadam, six tenths mile bituminous concrete, and 55 miles bituminous gravel. Richard W. Griffith’s 1935 Plymouth slides 50 feet down a Searsburg mountain embankment but is saved by a tree after tumbling and rolling.
