FBI secret war report fuels COINTELPRO probe

Senate intelligence panel releases a 77 page staff report detailing COINTELPRO from 1956 to 1971. Merger off Sprague stock drops in Boston Cabot deal ends

Snelling vows no cuts to basic needs in budget plan

NORTHFIELD Vermont Republican gubernatorial hopeful Richard Snelling told Central Vermont Rotarians that cutting state waste should precede reductions in spending on basic needs. He warned next year's budgets will seek 30 to 35 million more than 1977, with sharp asks for school aid and higher education. He urged tuition restraint and more scholarships, while signaling increases for state employees’ pay, law enforcement, development, dairy marketing and special education, all subject to waste cuts first.

Continental Grain pleads no contest to 50 counts

Continental Grain Co pleaded no contest to a 50 count indictment and paid a 500000 dollar fine after being charged with cheating on grain shipments to foreign buyers. The grand jury said the firm manipulated scales at its Westwego Louisiana export elevator to defraud buyers.
