The operation, led by Dr Denton Cooley, proceeded after about two hours of surgery and was described as a success by Cooley ten hours later. The donor was 15 year old Mrs Charles Martin, reported to have shot herself after an argument with her 18 year old husband.

Fire guts home of Forrest Beagle in Shaftsbury
Fire of undetermined origin gutted the interior of Forrest Beagle’s two story Eagle Street home, discovered by a nearby shop owner Friday afternoon. Fire chiefs said the downstairs was charred and gutted with smoke and water damage upstairs, while the exterior remained mostly intact. Fire crews fought from the rear and breached the attic to reach the fire source, with one firefighter nearly overcome by fumes. Firemen remained over two hours and planned overnight monitoring.
