Israel accuses Jordan of aiding guerrilla attacks

United Press International reports Israeli troops killed 17 Arab guerrillas who infiltrated from Jordan during Israel’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Israel blamed Jordanian forces on the east bank for backing the assaults with mortar fire while counterfire silenced Jordanian mortars. The saboteurs used Soviet rifles and Swedish machine guns. Al Ahram noted Nasser’s alert of troops as Jerusalem normalized after ceremonies.

Johnson Seeks Cautious Start For Vietnam Talks

President Johnson announced U S and North Vietnam will meet in Paris late next week to begin discussions on possible peace talks. He said Paris offers fair impartial treatment and noted the trip could mark a serious move toward peace in Southeast Asia, though warned of many hazards ahead.

Johnson charges tax hike blocked by legislative blackmail

President Johnson accuses Congress of using blackmail to block his tax increase and calls for immediate passage without further delay. Terrorist Bomb Explodes At Saigon Radio Television Complex

A Viet Cong bomb in a parked taxi destroyed Radio Saigon offices and damaged a TV station and AFVN facilities in Saigon. Three Vietnamese dead, 30 injured including five Americans. The blast followed heavy fighting with Viet Cong in nearby areas as U.S. and South Vietnamese forces pressed operations north and near the DMZ.

Court Martial Ordered For Vermont GI Picket

Army 2nd Lt. Dennis J. Morrisseau of Burlington Vermont faces a general court martial for willfully disobeying a lawful order after refusing to board a Fort Jackson bound Army flight. Morrisseau picketed the White House on March 10 to protest the Vietnam War and attended a Dartmouth rally for Eugene McCarthy. His arraignment is set for May 13 with potential five year prison, forfeiture of pay, and other penalties.

Police Action At Columbia Investigated

New York police actions during a campus protest at Columbia University led to a bloody melee and bloodied heads as officers cleared five buildings. Mayor Lindsay cited excessive force by some officers and ordered preliminary and full investigations while the university remained closed amid a student strike.

Houston Medical Team Performs World's Ninth Heart Transplant

Surgeons at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Houston transplanted a heart into 47 year old Everett Claire Thomas of Phoenix, marking the ninth such operation worldwide and the first in Houston. The donor was a 23 year old woman who died from a gunshot wound. the procedure lasted about three hours with the graft placed in 35 minutes after removal of Thomas's diseased valves.
