Water The North Bennington System Tells Its Story
In 1922 Mrs. Frederic B. Jennings funded a modern water system for North Bennington to honor her husband. The system grew to serve 440 homes in North Bennington and 140 in Shaftsbury plus 30 at Bennington College, with 69 hydrants in town and 26 in Shaftsbury. Water comes from a spring on East Mountain, stored in two reservoirs with 6.6 million gallons, pumped via electric stations and treated by a chlorinator. The board, led by Frederick Welling, oversees operation with 20 miles of mains. The watershed covers about 200 acres and will be managed for water yield under Vermont oversight.
