The Free List book on tax exemptions shocks readers
Alfred Balk estimates up to 600 billion dollars of real estate may be tax exempt. One third of national property could be off the tax rolls, shifting about 310 dollars per family yearly. Government and private entities hold many exemptions, from churches to veterans and foundations. The book calls for clearer lists, unified rules, and intergovernmental payments in lieu of taxes to balance the burden.

It says Americans begin earning for themselves only after tax bills, with the Chamber of Commerce asserting workers must cover daily taxes before income.
