Vermont Human Rights Commission Faces Closure After Budget Cuts
The 1976 Vermont legislature slashed the Vermont Human Rights Commission to a token $1,000 for fiscal 1977. Chair Margaret Lucenti says a meeting will decide the body's future as funding, internal dissension, and a limited mandate hobble enforcement of housing and discrimination cases. The attorney general may assume civil oversight, while criminal prosecutions remain possible but less preferred.
