Shelburne Republican leader Richard A. Snelling urged Sen. Winston Prouty to accept the GOP nomination for governor, saying Prouty’s dual role would unite the party. Snelling sent a letter requesting Prouty take the bid and noted he might run if asked, though Prouty planned no formal announcement until April 6.
A group of 12 proprietors and managers on the Bennington Flats endorse the Vermont Highway Department’s proposed four lane relocation of U S 7 and Vermont 9 to bypass urban Bennington. The plan includes two interchanges and a partial interchange east of the first U S 7 crossing and south of the college entrance, tying into a western Vermont 9 segment. A Brattleboro advertising firm failed to prove the Shaftsbury selectmen voted to repeal a 1951 zoning ordinance, rendering its bid to erect billboards invalid. The case, brought against the Town of Shaftsbury and Vermont officials, was dismissed by a Bennington County Court after judges noted the correct repeal authority lay with selectmen, not town meeting voters. A three foot metal object stamped U S Navy Radio active danger and Thresher property was found on Kilkee Beach Ireland by Michael Behal and turned over to police. Officials in Portsmouth NH noted it's unlikely an item from the 1963 Thresher sank off the US East Coast traveled to Ireland, though a buoyant cylinder could be possible.
In Troy New York the urban renewal Project B may pause if the city cannot provide adequate housing for families displaced by redevelopment. Rev Thomas Orr Jr chairing the Commission for Human Rights housing committee cited a federal mandate and noted concerns over rehabilitating 500 units, occupancy questions, and potential ghetto reinforcement. He reported 223 families left downtown Project A area with about 85 percent needing no aid from the Urban Renewal Agency.
