Bennington College Concert Showcases The Great Society Satire
Bennington College Community Orchestra directed by Henry Brant presented a varied program in the Carriage Barn with 90 participants. The standout piece The Great Society by Louis Calabro used news headlines to mock modern life in a rich, biting orchestral and choral setting. Student works Overature to Eupexim by Alice Webber and Kelvin and Milo by Joan Harkness received strong notices with lively rhythm and memorable solo lines. Vaughan Williams Fantasy on a Theme by Tallis offered expansive choral string sonorities and spatial acoustics, while Palestrina polyphony on balcony added historical contrast.
