McGovern Attacks Nixon Plan to End Free School Food
Sen. George S. McGovern challenged the Nixon plan to end distribution of essential foods to schools, orphanages, and charitable institutions, urging continuation of commodity programs. He cited rising costs forcing lunch price hikes, more nonpaying students, and lower food quality, and urged higher per-child funding for meat and milk. He introduced legislation to block the phaseout and pressed for improved protein and milk subsidies. Secretary Butz attended but offered no forecast on cattle prices.
