Aiken protests ICC boxcar service order and charges

Senator George D. Aiken R Vermont filed a protest with the Interstate Commerce Commission against new orders aimed at moving empty boxcars from New England to the Middle and Far West. The rules raise freight demurrage costs from 5 to 10 dollars per day for the first four days and 10 to 15 dollars for each additional day, while another order cuts free yard stay from seven to five days. Aiken warned the measures threaten higher feed grain costs in the Northeast and urged railroads to boost boxcar availability to support dairy and poultry freight rates. He also linked the issue to his push for a Lake Champlain waterway to lower transport costs for farmers.
