Bennington Village Election Sees Low Turnout and Narrow Approvals
Bennington Village voters turnout was light with 323 casting ballots in the annual election. Incumbent John Malone won the only contested race for tax collector 260 to 60 over Charles Mather, while other officers were elected without opposition for three year terms. Voters approved reimbursements for sewer and water extensions on Putnam Street totaling 596.46, adding one cent to the village tax rate, while rejecting Art 9 for Marion Hardy extensions 161 to 146 and other measures including a sidewalk payment and parking meters. An accountant from the Vermont Auditor’s Office was approved 187 to 102. Approval of Art 9 increases the general fund tax rate to 93 cents.

Youths self immolation protest shocks Syracuse crowd
Ronald Brazee a 16 year old Auburn student in the top two percent of verbal college board scores set himself on fire in front of the Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Syracuse. He doused his clothing with gasoline and survived initial efforts to smother the flames though he was in critical condition with burns over about 90 percent of his body. A note found on him said his action was to protest the Vietnam War and to shorten the war by even one day.
