Windham College Nearing Closure Amid Slowing Enrollment
Windham College faces a financial crisis as fixed costs and a shrinking student body threaten operations. President Harrison Symmes outlined three outreach aims to cut the deficit and stabilize funding, including recruitment, self maintenance in dorms, and addressing attrition. The college cannot secure a $500,000 short term loan and has mortgaged about half of its 200 acres to cover payroll while negotiating up to $1.5 million in loans. Enrollment stands at about 550 total, roughly 492 full time equivalents, far below the 1970s levels.

Vermont Lottery Bill Faces Senate Approval Hurdles
Legislation to establish a state lottery appears headed for a quiet death in the Senate Appropriations Committee after clearing the House last year. Appropriations Chairman John Boylan says the bill needs substantial work before floor consideration as lawmakers edge toward adjournment. Vermont remains the only New England state without a sweepstakes. Consultants estimate first year net between 2 million and 3 million dollars.
