Vidal's 1876 novel revisits a grim era with sly imagination
Gere Vidal crafts 1876 as a sequel to Burr, using journalist Charlie Schuyler to dramatize the 1876 election and Grant era corruption. The review lauds Vidal for blending fact and fiction, maintaining suspense through vivid characters like Emma and Schuyler, while acknowledging historical liberties and the appeal of imaginative storytelling over strict accuracy.
