Unemployment highest since Vermont estimates began in 1958
Vermont’s unemployment rate for the total labor force rose to 10.3 percent in February, the highest since the series began in 1958. About 20,850 people were jobless out of a 202,500 labor force, up 1,200 from January and 5,100 more than February 1974. Employment reached 181,650 in January, up slightly to February but 2,300 below a year earlier. Government employment rose, aided by student workers and the Public Service Employment program, offset by declines in construction and several manufacturing sectors. Over the year, government and service jobs grew while lumber, furniture, electrical machinery, nondurable goods, and contract construction declined.
