Day-Care Center Survives Early Adversity in Bennington
A year after opening with six children and two staff in a rented house the Bennington Child Day-Care Center Inc. has grown to serve 122 local children, now housed in space donated by the United Methodist Church. The center, licensed by the Department of Social Welfare, operates 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a language, arts, and movement program and a medical exam schedule. It relies on federal financing and a sliding scale based on family income, with 45 regular enrollments and 20 no-stipend students. The center faced a prior cash shortfall of 42 cents and periods of doubt, but community support and Dr. Eileen Dick’s leadership helped it persevere. The staff previously considered layoffs but chose continued operation, inspired by former president Mrs. Robert B. Condon. Industry backing remained elusive until a profit-based case could be made.

Pello Raps Selectmen at Village Meeting Pay Rises Approved
At the Village Meeting held at Bennington Elementary School, voters swiftly approved pay raises for nearly all village officials.
