United Nations plans for first global environment conference

After four years of talks, 25 nations outlined plans for the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment to be held in Stockholm from June 5 to 16. The agenda includes creating a permanent UN environmental unit, a global monitor dubbed Earthwatch, and six subject areas: human settlements resources pollution development information and education and organizational structure. The United States proposal calls for a voluntary fund to finance the unit, with Nixon pledging up to 100 million dollars over five years. Officials emphasized the conference aims to produce a framework for international collaboration rather than immediate measures.
