Watershed Bill Faces Eminent Domain Debate in Vermont House

Vermont lawmakers clash over a watershed and flood control bill that would empower the Water Resources Board to enter dam and river structure contracts. Five Republicans backed an amendment to remove eminent domain, while supporters cite flood protection and local bond needs in Ludlow for a project costing about 1.13 million dollars. The bill passed the House and moved to the Senate after a quick voice-vote sequence.

Fair Housing Bill Revival Fails Again

MONTPELIER A bid to revive the fair housing law failed after Speaker Richard W. Mallory ruled an amendment not germane to a veterans funds bill. Rep. William E. Mikell of Williston sought to join the housing measure with the veterans disbursement bill, hoping to frame anti discrimination as related to needy veterans. The bill’s defeat followed prior House action that it targeted real estate dealers only, omitting banks and lending institutions.
