Lions Club Hears Story Of Massive SS France
A large turnout at the Bennington Lions Club heard Joseph A. Savard, passenger representative of the French Line in Boston, describe the SS France. He cited an $80 million cost, four-year build, 1,035 foot length, 110 foot width, 66,000 gross tons, 60 round trips, 18 cruises, and about 700,000 miles. The ship carries 2,044 passengers with 1,111 crew and 200 chefs, and a New York crossing requires 11 1/2 days in dock for refueling. He presented a wood replica to Lion Robert Dimke and noted a crew load factor of 88 percent. Secretary Fred Butler announced the March 23 Ladies Night at Knotty Pine.
