Vermont electric cooperative seeks 30 percent rate hike

At a PSB hearing in Montpelier Vermont Electric Cooperative pressed for rate increases totaling over 30 percent. The cooperative reported an 18.2 percent request last June and an 18.8 percent pass through to cover higher power costs from Central Vermont Electric Power Corp. Officials claimed wholesale costs add about 30 thousand dollars monthly, allocated to each member. Critics cited outages blamed on the supplier, while supporters said the coop has performed well. The board noted a possible extra hike if a 6 percent return is not allowed and two rate filings are approved.
