Snowy Town Elections Give Higgins Re Election Victory
Incumbent Democrat Joseph Higgins won another three year term as selectman in Bennington by a 767 to 662 margin after a challenge from Republican Leon Eldred. Other races saw Carroll, Hall, Malone, and Pollock win auditor, tax collector, and related posts. Airport transfer to the state passed 856 to 412, with Barre Montpelier and Springfield voting similarly. Bennington Beer and Wine passed, hard liquor failed, and $50,000 for outside appraisers was rejected.

School Plan Turned Down in Four Towns by Narrow Margin
Four towns Mancnester Peru Sunderland Dorset held town meetings on a proposed union junior high school and sewer expansions. Dorset narrowly backed the union plan 143 to 136 while other targets failed. sewer projects fell 703 to 553 on Fillmore Street 748 to 490 on Pine Road and 753 to 498 on Dewey Street Extension. Turnout reached 1,462 ballots about 18 percent, up from 13 percent in 1966. Higgins attributed victory to his selectman record and campaign strategy, aided by a mobile amplifier and limited advertising.

Senate approves 18 million education bill in Vermont

New Interstate Would Link Bennington with Troy Area
Albany report says a new east west interstate linking the Northway with Vermont Route 9 west of Bennington is part of a proposed five year transportation program financed by a 2.5 billion bond issue presented by Gov. Nelson Rockefeller to the legislature. The plan allocates 1.25 billion for highways 1 billion for mass transit and 250 million for airport development. The new Interstate would run generally along NY 7 to the Vermont line becoming VT 9 linking Troy with the Northway via the Hoosick Street Bridge and the capitol district arterial system. The program also includes completing the Northway Albany to Canada and arterial expressways for Albany Troy and Schenectady. No completion timetable is given.
