Japan and Boston Orchestras Swap Players

A nine month year exchange between the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Japan Philharmonic Symphony includes Boston players traveling to Tokyo with families for a season of concerts and Japanese players coming to Boston. Violinist Eiichi Tanaka and Sheldon Rottenberg are among those on exchange with families, while Soichi Katsua pursues studies in Boston. The program is state supported for travel, with the Boston musicians funding some housing. The Japan America Quartet formed by exchange musicians has performed at Paine Hall and Harvard. Seiji Ozawa is cited as a notable guest conductor and potential future Boston maestro.
