Gustav Heinemann, new president of West Germany, is described as unusually honest and forthright in speech. He defeated Gerhard Schroeder by six votes on the third ballot in West Berlin and succeeds Heinrich Luebke, a largely ceremonial presidency. Heinemann’s career spans judge, minister, mayor, and anti Nazi activism, with a history of resigning over conscience and opposing covert rearmament. He is married with four children and 12 grandchildren.
