The Delinquent Taxes in Pownal Rise and Tax Fight Deepens
In Pownal the 1974 delinquent taxes total 34 100.96 dollars, 1973 11 960.80, with a long tail back to 1959 and a grand total over 50 000 dollars. Tax collector Ida Cameron notes 7 000 dollars collected since year end and warns that late payers incur an 8 percent penalty. The largest single debt is Patrick J M Gray with 7 452.37 dollars, who has partly paid and repossessed trailers drawing legal dispute over mobile home taxation and liens. The town eyes possible tax sales as trailers complicate lien enforcement, while the budget pressure grows from Mt Anthony Union High School District reassessment. The town meeting is tonight, polls open tomorrow, and Cameron struggles with the job’s stress while planning enforcement after Town Meeting.
