Armories in Berkshire face closure over recruitment woes

In Berkshire, North Adams Pittsfield and Greenfield National Guard armories may close if recruitment does not improve. Staff Sgt. Francis L. Chamberland says each infantry company is about 50 soldiers under its 158 man strength, making continued operation unlikely without growth. The armories employ about four full-time staff, and closure would cut local revenue. In Pittsfield, former law partner and associate of Rep. Silvio Conte pleaded guilty to four counts of forgery and larceny and received three years probation. Donald J. Shaker, 49, was indicted last fall for forging signatures to stock shares and using them as collateral for a bank loan. Judge Raymond R. Cross called the decision with a heavy heart.
