Bear cub killed on I 91 signals rising Vermont bear pop
A male black bear cub under a year old was struck and killed on I 91 about 20 miles north of the Massachusetts line. The 184 pound cub, born last winter, was believed to be the first seen in Vernon area in years. Game Warden Wayne Rowell said the cub’s death indicates the region’s bear population is increasing. The mother and possibly a second cub were nearby, as cubs stay close to mothers. The driver, Barbara Tyree, swerved to avoid the animal but could not prevent the fatal hit. He noted black bears are not as dangerous as grizzlies.
