Vermonter joins Chavez farm strikers on picket pilgrimage

George Lane of Northfield Vermont joined about 100 pilgrims traveling from St. Louis to the Coachella Valley to back Cesar Chavez's United Farm Workers in a nonviolent campaign amid clashes with Teamsters. The group, including clergy and lay church members, met Chavez, heard calls for a boycott of non UFW lettuce and grapes, and observed tense scenes as Teamsters and sheriff deputies faced farm workers on the picket lines. Lane's account notes confrontations, arrests, and the push for union recognition amid wage and contract disputes in the fields and surrounding area.
