The Bennington Planning Commission will hold a 7:45 p m public hearing Wednesday on a proposed comprehensive sign ordinance. It would require non conforming signs be removed within five years and tighten rules on sign size placement and lighting, affecting about 30 percent of town signs.
Town Manager Louis C. Sarelas suspends Bennington town employees union president George Rogers for five days citing arrogance, disobedience, misconduct and abusive language toward a resident. Rogers plans an unfair labor practice charge with AC LU and will seek a hearing before selectmen. contract talks continue with an election challenge pending before the state Labor Relations Board.
The Vermont Health Department asks Bennington to boost chlorination monitoring and adjust chlorine dosing after Bolles Brook tests. Sanitary engineer Linden Witherell warns distribution system contamination can occur despite current 15 gallon daily doses and stresses the need to track bacteria and chlorine residuals amid turbidity from nearby housing, camps, and a new logging road. Local manager Louis Savelas says a filtration plant is the long term solution, but until then officials should improve chlorination practices.

The Supreme Court upheld a 1974 ruling that the government controls Nixon White House tapes and documents. In a 7 to 2 decision Brennan led the majority denying Nixon’s claimed presidential privilege. The materials are held in the National Archives and may remain private for years pending regulations and possible lawsuits.
In Jerusalem an official said the United States was astonished by Washington’s demand that Israel withdraw from occupied Arab territories without preconditions. The Carter administration urged withdrawal from all disputed lands to pursue Middle East peace, rejecting automatic exclusions. Prime Minister Begin aims to keep lands west of the Jordan River out of talks.
About 150 residents crowded Manchester Elementary School to oppose a zoning expansion that would allow McDonald’s to locate on Route 7 behind a commercial strip. A straw vote against the change followed heated debate, with concerns over traffic, litter, effect on small businesses, and the potential for more fast food.
