Vermont AG reviews Supreme Court ruling impact on parochial aid law
Vermont Attorney General James M. Jeffords says he will study today’s high court decision against public aid to parochial schools to see if it affects Vermont’s 1971 law. He notes Rhode Island’s ruling is likelier to be overturned, while Pennsylvania’s resembles Vermont’s statute less. The program funds teachers and supplies to private schools with partial state reimbursement.

Supreme Court bars states from backing church schools
The Supreme Court ruled that state funding for parochial elementary and secondary schools violated the First Amendment by creating excessive entanglement of church and state. The decision, 5 to 4, struck down tax and grant schemes in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania aimed at supporting church related education, while upholding federal grants to some church affiliated colleges. Justice Burger wrote the majority. Justices Douglas Black and Marshall dissented.
