VSO Pops Concert Brightens Rainy Manchester Night

In the drenched Manchester crowd at the Southern Vermont Art Center, conductor Efrain Guigui led the Vermont Symphony Orchestra through a lively program. The evening featured Piston’s Fanfare for the Fighting French, Herold’s Overture to Zampa, Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue with pianist John Van Buskirk, Strauss waltzes, Berlin tributes, Grieg Lyric Suite, and Smetana The Moldau, all underscored by rain tapping Arkell Pavilion as the audience hummed along and applauded.

Broadway Boom Drives Theater Revenue to Record Heights

The 1976-77 Broadway season ended May 31 with a record 93.4 million in gross receipts, up from 70.8 million the prior year, while road shows grossed 82.6 million. Higher ticket prices and 1.6 million more paid attendances boosted totals. Annie led new musicals, A Chorus Line starred last year, and The Shadow Box won the Pulitzer and a Tony. Off Broadway activity continued at a slower pace with new works by Dick Shawn and Lars Forsell drawing attention.

Artists push for rights through union label on artwork

Boston Visual Artists Union members seek contracts and pay for exhibiting work, with rights on resale and reproduction. They cite Worcester Art Museum fee for entry and lack of insurance, noting the union’s gallery and a growing push for artists to organize. The group aims for broader protections, including show submission policies and access to spaces and jobs.
