Goals of ABC program outlined by Chapman to Bennington
Mt Anthony student Peter Chapman described the newly adopted ABC program to the Bennington League of Women Voters at a Shaftsbury picnic. He said the goal is better communication between minority groups and the dominant white culture and explained 10 Indian girls will attend Mt Anthony in the fall. Chapman noted the program began at Dartmouth to assist minority freshmen with tuition-free education, built on private school cooperation since 1965 and extended to public schools in 1967. He described host families and tutors, group study with Mt Anthony students, and a Mt Anthony course on Native American Studies. He discussed racial attitudes east and west coasts, cultural identity versus assimilation, and the aim to prepare Indians for leadership within their group and in wider society.
