Bennington College Bestows One Honorary Degree In 29th Commencement
Bennington College graduates 70 seniors at the 29th commencement, with 68 women and one man earning bachelor of arts degrees and one master of arts degree awarded. Laurence Jackson Hyman is the sole male graduate, son of authors Shirley Jackson and Stanley Edgar Hyman. An honorary doctor of letters was awarded to Mrs. Joseph Swan of Farmington, Connecticut, founder and early trustee of the college. Oscar M. Ruebhausen accepted the degree on her behalf. The ceremony emphasized mutual education between faculty and students and noted the college’s policy of awarding no prizes or medals.
