Saigon dispatch reports U S troops killed 77 guerrillas as they pressed pursuit along the Mekong Delta swamps below Saigon. The fighting involved guerrillas including women and children and featured armored river boats with air conditioning and an ice cream parlor.
British Foreign Secretary George Brown warned the United Nations must create a new form of peacekeeping force for the Middle East and urged Israel not to annex part of Jerusalem. He proposed the secretary general appoint an unchallenged personal representative with staff to oversee cease fire and peace talks, stressing the UN charter's guarantee of territorial integrity amid ongoing tensions.
Luci Johnson Nugent, President Johnson's daughter, gave birth to a healthy 8 lb 10 oz baby boy at Seton Hospital in Austin. The child has slate gray eyes and fair skin. Luci and baby are reported in excellent condition. Pat Nugent and Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson were among those awaiting the newborn, with doctors confirming a normal delivery.
Arab troops and civilians clashed with British forces in Aden over inde pendence plans. Rebels wielded Chinese Communist and Russian machine guns while mutinies and riots left about 30 dead. UPI reports Cassius Clay was found guilty by an all white jury after 20 minutes of deliberation and sentenced by U.S. Dist. Judge Joe Ingraham to a $10,000 fine and five years in prison for refusing induction into the U.S. Army. Clay planned an appeal as his attorney sought a bond.
An informal poll of the constitutional convention committee on the legislature shows only one of 27 members favored replacing the present two house system with a unicameral one. The state is unlikely to adopt a one house legislature.
