Henry's Diner marks 50 years on Bank Street in Burlington

Henry's Diner celebrates a half century at the same Bank Street site with half price coffee and festive hats. Founder Henry Couture opened in 1925 after a battle with the aldermen, pioneered customer gifts, and created a toasted exterior frankfurt sandwich. Now nearly 91, Couture recalls early days as Frank Goldstein expanded the business, a 1969 fire led to rebuilding, and the diner's century-old charm faces quiet local attention.

Dorset library grant rules shape Vermont standards

The Dorset right to read act guides environmental education and service to the culturally isolated. The Dorset Library serves children with a junior room adding 10 to 20 books every six weeks. Grants require a building open twelve hours weekly, listed phone, full Vermonter access, and local tax support. It must catalog its collection, spend at least 15 percent of its budget on books, join the Vermont Union catalogue, provide statistics to the Department of Libraries, and cooperate with schools and regional networks. The grant requires two years of operating budget parity with the grant amount, staff paid at federal minimum, salaries not funded by the grant, and leadership by a librarian with a library science degree. Locally Emma Stannard holds this credential. Volunteers may be used. The head librarian must have a driver’s license, help select books, and visit the regional library thrice a year for supplementary titles. The local library board meets quarterly and aims to meet Vermont Library Association standards.
