Mariana Islanders vote union with U.S. commonwealth

In Saipan the northern Mariana Islands backed American citizenship and commonwealth status by a wide margin in a plebiscite overseen by U.N. observers. The vote endorses a February pact with the United States and moves toward Congressional ratification.

Rutland firm bids low for Mt Anthony School renovation

The John A. Russell Construction Co. of Rutland submitted the lowest bid of 1.796 million for a 1.575 million Mt. Anthony Union Junior High School renovation project. Other bids ranged up to 1.963 million. Officials plan to review cost-cut measures including a potential 200 thousand furniture save, with state approvals and local labor usage emphasized.

Vermont highway funds released after billboard dispute

The U S Transportation Department released 7.245 million dollars in highway construction funds to Vermont, paused by a dispute over the state's anti billboard law. Acting Highway Commissioner Hal Howard said about 4 million will back Interstate 91 work near St Johnsbury, with the remainder for other highway projects. The money had been held in escrow pending whether Vermont must reimburse billboard owners whose signs are removed. The billboards ban off premises roadside advertising.

Overseas trade balance records unprecedented six billion swing

The Commerce Department announced a record six billion dollar improvement in the basic balance from January through March, the largest quarterly shift in history. A rebound from late 1974 and a drop in investments overseas largely drove the gain, while payments for U S military arms from Middle East buyers also helped.
