Hoff Urges Senate Support for Rural Water Bill
Vermont Governor Hoff told a Senate Agriculture Committee the proposed Aiken bill to fund rural water projects is essential for rural America. It would authorize 25 million dollars yearly in construction grants and 5 million in planning grants managed by the Farmers Home Administration. Hoff cited widespread lack of central water and the high costs for small communities, urging grants covering up to 40 percent of project costs. He cited Addison Bridport Shoreham as a three town case needing 75 miles of mains for 3,000 residents and noted half the 2.6 million dollar cost could not be self funded. Aiken said about 30,000 rural communities need new systems to support growth and stability. He recalled 50 Vermont dairy producers facing market loss without reliable water for sanitation.
