Supreme Court expands Negro rights and police powers in term
The 1967 68 term produced major rulings on housing and education rights for Negroes while granting police new powers. The court banned racial discrimination in housing sales and rentals, curbed freedom of choice desegregation plans, allowed police eavesdropping with court orders, and permitted stop and frisk for weapons when warranted. It also upheld draft card restrictions and barred mass picketing to block public buildings. The high court avoided ruling on the legality of the Vietnam War and left church state issues with states.

Vermont Officials See ADC Ruling as Having Limited Effect
Vermont Social Welfare Commissioner John Wackerman says the U S Supreme Court decision striking down Alabama's ban on welfare for children when a substitute father exists will likely have little impact in Vermont. He notes Vermont has no such provision and will continue to provide ADC benefits to the mother and children while requiring any unrelated male in the home to pay his own way. If that male fathers a child, the child becomes ineligible for ADC benefits.
