Movies draw economy conscious audiences
Hollywood by Vernon Scott. In long lines at the Pacific Cinema Dome Theater, The Return of the Pink Panther drew crowds but will exit after four weeks to make way for Rollerball. The box office boom persists in top theaters due to better films and economic recession. Bob Selig of Pacific Theaters notes 25 percent uptick over last year as audiences seek escape close to home. He cites word of mouth as key, and observes G rated fare sells poorly outside Disney, while kids demand more excitement. The risk remains moving out hits for bombs.
