Girl Editor Must Stand Trial For Refusal To Reveal Sources
Annette Buchanan editor of the Daily Emerald at the University of Oregon was ordered to stand trial for contempt of court after refusing to name her sources for a May 24 story on marijuana use. Lane County Circuit Judge Edward Leavy set June 27 for trial and warned of possible penalties including six months in jail and a $300 fine. Buchanan defended the principle of protecting a source, saying she would not disclose informants and that disclosure would violate journalistic ethics and constitutional rights. Her attorney signaled plans for a jury trial and possible appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
