Shaftsbury Descendant Provides Footnote to History
Mrs Maurice Douglass of Cold Spring Road, a direct descendant of Stephen and Thankful Rice, adds details to the Bannner story about two early Bennington settlers buried in a family cemetery on Harwood Hill. The original marker was replaced after 1920 when graves were damaged by children and a bulldozer path. the original flat stone is preserved at the Douglass home while a granite marker now marks the plot. The Rice log cabin predates the Revolutionary War on the Rice farm near U.S. 7 south of the Bennington Shaftsbury line.
