Six Killed In Jet Crash At Calcutta

A Pan American World Airways Boeing 707 with 63 aboard crashed on landing at Dum Dum International Airport Calcutta during monsoon rain. Six people died including a stewardess a child and three women. Twenty four were hospitalized. several passengers were thrown clear or pulled from the burning wreckage. The flight No 1 was en route from Los Angeles to New York with a last stop in Bangkok and had clearance to land when the plane hit the ground short of the runway.

Air Force Launches Eight Relay Satellites

CAPE KENNEDY APS Titan 3C rocket launched at 10 04 am EDT carrying eight radio relay satellites to close the Pentagon Viet Nam direct communications gap. The 124 foot three barreled launcher used solid side boosters and achieved a 21 000 mile orbit with a six hour countdown and 25 functioning satellites for voice teletype and high quality reconnaissance.

Guaranteed Income Plan Urged for Needy Vermonters

Vermont officials including Thomas C. Davis urged establishing an income maintenance plan or guaranteed income level for needy residents during a one day poverty tour with Lt. Gov. John Daley and a 11 member task force. Davis questioned the value of education without transportation and called for work on a plan possibly using a $2 minimum wage or subsidies. Governor Hoff asked the task force to evaluate agency effectiveness in aid efforts as they begin formulating recommendations.

Waitress Arrested in Atlanta For Smuggling Guns to Convicts

An Atlanta prison incident saw Arlene Granito, 25, a Newark waitress, charged after two pistols and ammunition were smuggled through a plumbing line to four inmates. The convicts held 21 hostages for 28 hours before surrendering. Granito faced $25,000 bond and a U.S. commissioner hearing. The four inmates, with combined sentences totaling 185 years, planned an escape but were thwarted.
